Irène Jacob was born in Switzerland on July 15, 1966. She made her motion picture debut in 1987 with a small role as a piano instructor in Louis Malle's Au Revoir, Les Enfants. After seeing this, Krzysztof Kieslowski selected her for the dual role of Veronika/Veronique in The Double Life of Veronique for which she won the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1991.

Her most popular role was in 1994's Three Colors: Red where she portrayed a beautiful but lonely Swiss model in a magical thought-provoking tale of destiny and coincidence.
