Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Corey Koskie's game-winning hit secured the Minnesota Twins' best July in nearly two decades. Koskie's RBI double off Kelvim Escobar in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the red-hot Twins to a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Minnesota, which suffered a collapse in July of 2001, is doing the exact opposite this season. The Twins improved to 13-3 since the All-Star break and have won 17 games in July for the first time since 1984. Minnesota squandered a 4-0 lead but received an excellent performance from reliever Bob Wells (1-1), who tossed two strong innings to maintain the tie. Escobar pitched a perfect ninth but gave up a leadoff single to pinch hitter Bobby Kielty in the 10th. Jacque Jones sacrificed and Cristian Guzman was walked intentionally. "Guzman was almost .500 versus Escobar while the next three guys did not have but one hit between them," Toronto manager Carlos Tosca said of his decision to walk Guzman. "I figured they might (walk Guzman) to set up a double play opportunity," Koskie said. "It's the manger's job to think, it's my job just to hit. Some guys might get fired up in that situation, but I didn't take it personally." Koskie, who had an RBI single in the third inning, lined a 2-0 pitch from Escobar (5-5) into the right-center field gap to plate Kielty with the winning run. Minnesota won for the ninth time in 10 games but wasted a solid start by Eric Milton, who allowed just two runs while striking out six in six innings. He retired the first 13 batters he faced before allowing a single with one out in the fifth. "I'm just concentrating on coming out and setting the tone," said Milton, who retired the first seven batters in his previous start. "I had good velocity on my fastball and I kept throwing it until they proved they could hit it." "It seemed like Milton's velocity went down in the fifth," Tosca said. "But for the first four innings he was dominant." Milton induced a double play to erase the hit in the fifth inning but could not get through the sixth unscathed. He gave up a one-out double to Shannon Stewart, who went to third on Eric Hinske's single. Jose Cruz had an RBI double and Hinske scored on Carlos Delgado's groundout as Toronto pulled with 4-2. LaTroy Hawkins started the seventh and gave up consecutive singles to Chris Woodward and rookie Josh Phelps. His 17-inning scoreless streak was snapped when Dave Berg's grounder scored Woodward to make it 4-3. Stewart doubled with two out to plate Berg with game-tying run. Minnesota scored four runs in the third inning against Toronto starter Roy Halladay, who gave up eight hits in seven innings. Guzman and Koskie had run-scoring hits before Torii Hunter capped the inning with a two-run single. "(Hallday) had stuff all night but we thought they were picking up his delivery a little bit," Tosca said. "Not to take anything away from the Twins, but very seldom do you see Doc get hit like that." "It was important not to get carried away tonight," Halladay said. "I just went back and made my pitches. People say that add-on runs lose games so I tried to keep them from adding on after the third inning."
