Game Story

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Steve Parris and the Cincinnati Reds just keep getting beat.

Bret Boone and Carlos Hernandez both homered and drove in three runs as the San Diego Padres handed Parris his sixth straight loss and the Reds their ninth setback in 10 games, 8-5.

Parris (2-10) leads the majors in losses after posting an impressive 11-4 mark last season. The righthander barely made it out of the first inning tonight, surrendering a two-run single to Phil Nevin and a three-run homer to Boone.

"We started out really good. The bases-loaded hit by Phil Nevin on a tough pitch started us off. We needed that," Boone said. "Then I get the three-run homer, that was big too. It came on a slider. I've had a tough time of late. I needed that."

His problems continued in the third. After the Reds rallied to cut the deficit to 5-4 against Brian Meadows, Parris was rocked for a two-run shot by Hernandez.

Parris is winless since beating the Padres here on May 9, but was rocked for seven runs -- five earned -- and six hits over three innings tonight. He has one more loss than Houston's Jose Lima, who is also experiencing a complete reversal of his suprising success last year.

"You have to get somebody out," Reds manager Jack McKeon said. "He's not getting anybody out. We have to re-evaluate his position. We've got to get somebody else in that slot. You can't go three or four innings every outing. We got the hits tonight, then we had pitching like this. That's kind of the way things are going for us."

"There's no real need for any quotes tonight," Parris said. "This is an easy one to write."

Meadows did not fare much better, allowing four runs and eight hits over 2 1/3 innings. Carlos Reyes (1-2), Matt Whiteside, rookie Kevin Walker and Trevor Hoffman combined to hold the slumping Reds to just one run and two hits over the final 6 2/3 innings.

Pokey Reese led off the game with a homer for Cincinnati (32-33), which slipped one game below .500 for the first time since May when it was 14-15.

Despite the fact that the Padres entered tonight having lost nine of their previous 12 games, a major league season-high crowd of 60,760 showed up at Qualcomm Stadium for a postgame fireworks show. A different type of fireworks were on display in the first inning.

Reese smacked an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left to get the Reds off to a good start. But Parris, who surrendered six runs and 10 hits over six innings against Cleveland on Saturday, gave the lead right back and then some.

Eric Owens led off with an infield single and Al Martin and Tony Gwynn followed with base hits to load the bases. Nevin stroked a single to left, plating Owens and Martin to give San Diego the lead for good.

Parris got Ryan Klesko to ground into a force play, but Boone turned on an 0-1 offering, drilling it into the seats in left-center for a 5-1 lead.

"This was real big," Boone said. "We had to stop the losing streak. It's nice to do it with a big crowd here. The Reds beat us up pretty good out there. Everyone is talking about getting to .500. You can't get to .500 until you win a bunch of series in a row."

Sean Casey began the second inning the way Reese started the first, smacking a homer to right. Aaron Boone doubled to left and Eddie Taubensee singled him home, cutting the deficit to 5-3. Meadows wiggled out of further trouble when he struck out slumping Ken Griffey Jr. with one on to end the inning.

Griffey was 1-for-4 and is batting just .229.

Aaron Boone's RBI single in the third cut the deficit to 5-4, but again Parris could not keep it close.

Nevin grounded out leading off the bottom half, but Klesko reached on Reese's fielding error at short. Bret Boone flied to left and Hernandez cracked a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right-center, giving the Padres a three-run cushion.

"It was a fastball, middle away on a 2-0 pitch," Hernandez said. "You have to be ready to swing and wait for a pitch you can hit. Most of the time, it's going to be a fastball. You better be ready for it."

Chris Stynes homered off Whiteside in the sixth, cutting the deficit to 7-5. But the Padres' bullpen held its ground thereafter and Hernandez singled home Klesko in the eighth to cap the scoring.
