Game Story

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Brian Boehringer earned his first career win as a starter and Ruben Rivera belted two solo homers as the San Diego Padres posted a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Boehringer (3-1), making just his second start of the year following 22 relief appearances, allowed two runs and six hits over five innings with no walks and four strikeouts. He was 0-6 in eight previous starts with the New York Yankees and Padres.

Boehringer got a no-decision in his first start on Saturday, yielding one run and three hits over four innings.

Rivera, who entered the game batting just .195, homered in the second and sixth innings off Jose Silva (2-4) for his first career multi-homer game. He also took over the team lead with 10 homers this season.

"When I try too hard, I pull everything," said Rivera, who hit his first homer to center field and his second to right-center field. "When I'm more relaxed, I see the ball and go with it. Now, I'm not swinging too hard and I feel better up there."

Rivera narrowly missed a third homer in the eighth inning, flying out to the wall in right field.

"It's got to help him, no question," San Diego manager Bruce Bochy said. "He almost had three tonight. He's got incredible talent and now he's using all the fields."

Three San Diego relievers combined for four scoreless innings. Trevor Hoffman recorded the final three outs for his 13th save in 16 opportunties. Hoffman recorded his first save since becoming the 25th player in history to reach 2,000 by striking out the side against Oakland on June 10.

He good-naturedly kidded Boehringer for "abandoning" the bullpen corps.

"As much grief as we've given him for leaving us down there, he's given us two tremendous efforts," Hoffman said.

Silva surrendered four runs and six hits over six innings as the Pirates dropped to 2-2 on their season-high 12-game road trip.

"Silva was fine tonight, although he walked five guys," Pirates manager Gene Lamont said. "They display balls and strikes here and he had about half balls and half strikes. You can't pitch like that and expect to win, but we're going to be patient with him. He has good stuff. You can tell that by the fact he only gave up four runs with all those walks. Early on, his stuff was as good as it has ever been."

San Diego's Tony Gwynn went 1-for-2 with two walks and needs 19 hits for 3,000.

The Padres grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first as Quilvio Veras singled, moved to third on Gwynn's single and scored on Dave Magadan's sacrifice fly.

The Pirates sliced the deficit in half in the top of the third on Brian Giles' RBI single, but San Diego regained its two-run margin when Damian Jackson came home on Silva's wild pitch in the fourth.

Ed Sprague reached Boehringer for a solo homer in the fifth before Rivera answered for the Padres an inning later.

"When I don't try too hard, I seem to have a good ballgame," Rivera said. "I wish it could be this way all the time. When I don't have a good at-bat, I think about it too much the next time, but I'm feeling better lately."

San Diego's John Vander Wal picked up his 103rd career pinch hit with a single in the eighth inning and tied Mike Lum for 11th place on the all-time list.

Sprague and Jason Kendall had two hits apiece for the Pirates, who opened the trip by taking two of three in Los Angeles. Al Martin went 1-for-4 and is batting .500 (14-for-28) in his last six contests.

"We still got two more games here," Lamont said. "We were right in this one. We gave up an unearned run, but we'll be fine."

Pittsburgh right fielder Brant Brown left in the bottom of the fifth with a sprained right wrist and is day-to-day.

"It doesn't look serious," Lamont said. "I don't think there's a problem. He hurt it the second time he dove for the ball."
