Game Story

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Woody Williams tossed a four-hitter for the San Diego Padres' first complete game of the season and Phil Nevin homered for the second time in as many days in a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Williams (6-3) took a shutout into the ninth inning before rookie Pat Burrell homered to break it up. He struck out four and walked two for his first complete game since June 25, 1998 at Montreal.

San Diego had been the only team without a complete game this season. Andy Ashby was the last Padre to hurl one when he defeated the Chicago Cubs, 7-3, on August 31, 1999.

Williams and Phillies starter Bruce Chen (5-1) matched zeros until the bottom of the sixth, when San Diego's Ryan Klesko drew a two-out walk after being down 0-2. Nevin followed by blasting Chen's 0-1 pitch over the right-field fence for his 21st home run.

San Diego put away the game with two more runs in the eighth off reliever Chris Brock. Williams walked on four pitches before Eric Owens tripled him home for a three-run lead. Ruben Rivera followed with an RBI single.

Chen took the tough loss, allowing two runs and four hits with five strikeouts over seven innings. He had been 1-0 with a 3.46 ERA in three starts since being acquired from Atlanta in a deal for Ashby.
