Game Story

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Ruben Quevedo again baffled the San Diego Padres. And he had a lot of help. Quevedo allowed one run over seven innings and Geoff Jenkins hit a grand slam as the Milwaukee Brewers halted a four-game losing streak with a 12-1 rout of the Padres. A week ago in Milwaukee, Quevedo (3-5) limited San Diego to three hits en route to his first career shutout. He gave up seven hits Friday night but lowered his ERA to 3.23, tops among Brewers' starters. "My breaking pitches have been working real well for me the last couple of games, so I've been trying to take advantage of that, pitch some good games and get some wins for our team," said Quevedo, who walked three and struck out seven. "My breaking pitches, the curveball and changeup, have been working real good." "You've just gotta keep Ruben in the game at all times," Milwaukee manager Jerry Royster said. "You don't want him to relax because of the flow or anything like that. You've gotta keep him focused and make sure he's on the right track. And he has been." Jose Cabrera worked the last two innings to help Milwaukee snap a three-game road losing streak. "It's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel," Royster said. "I need more. I need to see good, solid baseball for a couple of weeks. We really haven't done it. We really just have not been good. We've made a lot of mistakes. Even tonight, we made some mistakes and we were lucky they didn't come back to haunt us." Jenkins' blast in the fourth off starter Dennis Tankersley (1-1) was the second in as many days against San Diego and gave Milwaukee a 7-0 lead. Alex Sanchez capped an impressive May with his first career four-hit game and Tyler Houston had two hits and two RBI for the Brewers. Milwaukee got to Tankersley in the second as Richie Sexson led off with a single, Jenkins walked and Houston doubled to make it 1-0. The Brewers padded the lead the following inning. Jeffrey Hammonds doubled with one out and scored on a single by Sexson. Jenkins also singled and Houston doubled in a run, but Jenkins was thrown out at the plate. Quevedo helped himself with a leadoff single in the fourth. Sanchez walked, Eric Young sacrificed and Sexson drew a two-out walk ahead of Jenkins' seventh homer of the season. "I knew I drove it," Jenkins said. "I knew I hit it good, but I didn't know for sure if it was going out because it gets a little heavier at night here. It was a slider away, and I haven't been hitting those well, to be honest." Ryan Klesko accounted for the Padres' offense with a homer in the fifth. "You're gonna lose ballgames," San Diego manager Bruce Bochy said. "We have just been playing bad baseball at times. And tonight, we were terrible. We had a nice crowd here and we didn't execute offensively." Padres center fielder Ray Lankford dropped a fly ball with the bases loaded and two out in the sixth, allowing three runs to score. "Defensively, we hurt ourselves," Bochy said. "You're not going to win games like that. You're going to get what you deserve, and we got it tonight." Sanchez hit .345 (29-for-84) with 10 runs scored and seven stolen bases in May.
