Game StorySAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Tony Gwynn had three hits, almost ensuring he will reach 3,000 on the road, and Wally Joyner drove in three runs as the San Diego Padres finally beat the Houston Astros with a 10-3 triumph.
After lining out in the first inning, Gwynn homered in the third, singled in a five-run fifth and doubled in the eighth to give him 2,994 career hits. The Padres begin an 11-game road trip against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.
Wade Boggs of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays had two hits today and also is within six hits of 3,000.
"I was working with (batting coach) Merv Rettenmund and I felt good at the plate," said Gwynn, who was hitless in the first two games of the series.
Gwynn refused comment on Jim Leyritz, who was traded to the New York Yankees Saturday and claimed that the media coverage of Gwynn's chase for 3,000 hits was distracting the team.
Gwynn was 7-for-24 with four RBI on San Diego's 1-5 homestand. The Padres snapped a season-high, eight-game losing streak and won for the first time in nine meetings with the Astros this season.
"Things like that are tough to get out of sometimes," said San Diego manager Bruce Bochy. "Not that we're out of it. I've always said that hitting is contagious and once we started it caught on."
Sterling Hitchcock (10-8) allowed two runs and three hits over six innings to win for the sixth time in his last eight starts. He walked two and struck out one. After walking Craig Biggio to start the game, Hitchcock retired 14 of the next 15 batters and did not allow a hit until Tim Bogar led off the sixth inning with his fourth homer.
Jose Lima (14-6), bidding to become the first 15-game winner in the National League, was tagged for eight runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.
"I'm glad I got a bad start out of the way," said Lima, who pitched at least seven innings in his five previous starts. "It was my worst start of the year. I got both my fastball and changeup up. I have no excuses. I'm not ashamed of it."
Phil Nevin had three hits, three runs and two RBI for the Padres, who were held to five runs or less in each game during their slide.
Nevin gave San Diego an early lead when he led off the second inning with his 13th home run. He made his second straight start at third base after coming off the bench for eight consecutive contests.
"That's what I want, to play everyday. When you're out there every fourth or fifth day it's tough to keep your stroke," said Nevin, who is in the lineup after George Arias was designated for assignment. "All through my career I've been looking for an opportunity. If this is it I want to make the most of it."
Chris Gomez led off the third with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and one out later Gwynn sent Lima's 1-0 pitch over the right-field fence for his fourth homer and a 3-0 lead.
Lima struck out Hitchcock to start the fifth and Eric Owens added seventh homer to make it 4-0. Gwynn followed with a single up the middle, Reggie Sanders blooped a hit to left and Lima walked Nevin to load the bases. Joyner lined a single to right to score Gwynn and Sanders and chase Lima.
"We got some good hits and some seeing-eye hits and they both got us some runs," Joyner said.
Ben Davis added a two-run single to give San Diego an 8-0 bulge.
After Bogar's homer, Glen Barker and Russ Johnson singled around a foulout by Biggio. Jeff Bagwell's sacrifice fly made it 8-2 and Hitchcock retired Derek Bell on a groundout before yielding to Donne Wall in the seventh.
San Diego pushed the lead to 10-2 in the sixth on an RBI double by Nevin and run-scoring single by Joyner.
Rookie Daryle Ward hit his third homer with one out in the eighth for San Diego's final run.
