Game Story

Rafael Palmeiro drew a bases-loaded walk and Cal Ripken followed with a two-run single as the red-hot Baltimore Orioles scored three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Anaheim Angels, 7-4, in the rubber game of a three-game series.

Eric Davis hit a pair of homers and had three RBI for the Orioles, who are 10-1 since the All-Star break. It was Davis' second multi-homer game of the season and the 15th of his career.

With the game tied, 4-4, in the ninth, Baltimore took the lead against closer Troy Percival (2-4), who had allowed just two earned runs in his last 22 2/3 innings. Jeff Reboulet led off with a walk and Mike Bordick bunted him over. After Rich Becker popped out, Brady Anderson also walked.

Davis worked out a walk to load the bases and Percival continued to struggle, walking Palmeiro on four pitches. Ripken hit a ground single up the middle for a 7-4 lead, finishing Percival.

"I was up there to take," said Palmeiro. "I was going to make him throw me a strike. He seemed to be having a problem getting the ball down in the zone. A couple of those pitches were close."

"He gave me the call one or two times," Percival said of home plate umpire Gary Cederstrom. "Either he missed those or he missed all the others. Those aren't good pitches anyway. I'm trying to throw the ball down at the knees, not thigh high. I felt in the groove for the last six weeks, but I couldn't throw strikes tonight."

Percival's manager agreed.

"It was a matter of inches on all of his pitches," said Terry Collins. "It was a matter of inches with Caddy (Greg Cadaret), too. That's the name of the game. We had a good enough lead and we couldn't close it down. Then it got real tough against their bullpen."

Baltimore starter Mike Mussina allowed four runs -- two earned -- and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. He walked none and struck out five before giving way to Jesse Orosco (4-1), who retired all five batters he faced.

"We gave them one yesterday and they gave us one today," said Orioles manager Ray Miller. "I know that's kind of a tough way to lose."

Omar Olivares started for Anaheim and surrendered three runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out seven but failed to snap a personal four-game losing streak.

The loss was the eighth in 10 home games for Anaheim, which has dropped 12 of 16 overall and fell into second place in the American League West, one-half game behind Texas.

The Angels took advantage of an error to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Justin Baughman reached second baseman Reboulet's miscue with one out and stole second. After moving to third on a groundout, Baughman scored on Darin Erstad's double to right-center field.

Baltimore went ahead, 2-1, in the sixth. Davis led off with his 14th home run and, two outs later, Chris Hoiles doubled to left-center to score B.J. Surhoff with the go-ahead run.

The Angels answered with three runs in the bottom half. Gary DiSarcina singled and Erstad reached on catcher's interference. Jim Edmonds knotted the contest with a single to left but Tim Salmon struck out and Cecil Fielder bounced out. Garret Anderson gave Anaheim a 4-2 lead with a two-run triple.

The triple extended Anderson's hitting streak to a career-best 17 games. He is batting .394 (28-for-71) over that stretch.

The Orioles knotted it in the seventh on Davis' second homer, a two-run shot off Cadaret.
