Game Story

Brian Bohannon allowed two hits over 7 1/3 innings and Gary Sheffield returned from suspension to record two hits and an RBI as the Los Angeles Dodgers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

After Tony Womack led off the game by reaching on an error, Bohannon (5-7) retired 10 in a row before giving up consecutive doubles to Manny Martinez and Eric Young. Bohannon, acquired from the New York Mets on July 10th, has allowed one earned run in each of his last five starts.

"I felt good tonight," Bohannon said. "I had really good command on the inside corner and with the changeup. I always felt like I could start. Hoff (manager Glenn Hoffman) and Tommy (general manager Tommy Lasorda) are giving me the chance to go out there every five days, that feels good."

Antonio Osuna came on with one out in the eighth and needed just five pitches to retire the side. Jeff Shaw tossed a perfect ninth for his 34th save in 40 chances.

The meeting was the first between the teams since a bench-clearing brawl on June 28th. The fight started when Sheffield elbowed Pittsburgh catcher Jason Kendall in the head after being thrown out at the plate.

"He must have been hitting in his backyard cage," Hoffman said of Sheffield. "He gave us a big lift in the middle of the lineup. It was really nice to see him swing the bat."

The win moved the Dodgers five games behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL wild-card race.

Pittsburgh's Todd Van Poppel (1-1) allowed just three runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings, but suffered his first National League loss.

"I was happy with the way (Van Poppel) threw," Pirates manager Gene Lamont said. "He struggled with his breaking ball up, but he battled through it. He kept us in the ballgame."

Johnson led off the third with his 16th homer, a blast over the center-field fence.

"It was a fastball out and over the plate. I was able to extend and get it out of the park," Johnson said. "If we're going to do something we need to do it this homestand."

After Young's RBI double in the top of the fourth tied it, the Dodgers took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame. Sheffield started it with a double, took third on a single by Eric Karros and scored when Bobby Bonilla grounded into a double play.

Los Angeles tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Eric Young reached on shortstop Kevin Polcovich's throwing error. After Mark Grudzielanek singled him to third, Sheffield lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.
