Game Story

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Devon White hit a pinch three-run homer to snap a sixth-inning tie as the Los Angeles Dodgers posted a 7-3 victory over the San Diego Padres.

The score was tied 3-3 in the sixth when Adrian Beltre singled with one out off reliever Carlos Reyes (0-1). Jacob Brumfield followed with a single that sent Beltre to third and Brumfield took second on the throw.

Paul Loduca struck out for the second out. White batted for pitcher Chan Ho Park and belted a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right-center field for his second homer, giving the Dodgers a 6-3 advantage.

"The main thing was getting us on top and getting a win," White said. "The pitch was a fastball and I just tried to go up the middle with it. The few chances that I've had to pinch-hit, I'm going up there looking for a pitch to drive."

"The ball got more of the plate than I'm sure he wanted," said San Diego manager Bruce Bochy about Reyes' pitch to White. "That's a bad pitch with a base open."

Gary Sheffield's second homer of the game in the seventh provided the Dodgers with an insurance run. Sheffield also hit a two-run shot in the third inning and is tied with Jay Bell of Arizona and Jose Canseco of Tampa Bay for the major league lead with five.

It was the 12th career multi-homer game for Sheffield and first since July 13, 1997 against Philadelphia.

Park (1-1) went five innings, allowing three runs and eight hits to get his first win in three starts. He walked two and struck out two in improving to 5-3 lifetime against San Diego.

Wally Joyner went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Padres.

Trailing 3-0 in the fifth, the Padres finally got to Park, who had allowed four singles through the first four innings.

Chris Gomez led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout. Quilvio Veras reached on an infield hit to plate Gomez with the Padres' first run.

Park struck out Reggie Sanders for the second out, but Tony Gwynn followed with an RBI double and Joyner came through with a run-scoring single, tying the score at 3-3.

"He was really good for the first three innings," said Los Angeles manager Davey Johnson on Park's performance. "He was aggressive and going after guys. After that it was like he almost got too smart."

The Dodgers got on the board in the opening inning against San Diego starter Sterling Hitchcock. Mark Grudzielanek singled with one out, stole second and came around to score on a single by Eric Karros.

Sheffield's two-run homer in the third extended the lead to 3-0.

Like Park, Hitchcock also lasted five innings. The lefthander surrendered three runs and four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
