Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Long after Randy Johnson and Kevin Brown had departed, Raul Mondesi decided baseball's most anticipated season opener.
Mondesi tied the game with a three-run homer in the ninth and won it with a two-run blast in the 11th to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to an 8-6 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Mondesi connected with two outs in the ninth on a 3-0 pitch off closer Gregg Olson, tying the game at 6-6 and preventing Johnson from winning his Arizona debut. With two outs in the 11th, Gary Sheffield walked and Mondesi hit a 1-0 pitch from loser John Frastacore over the left field wall, ending a contest that featured six homers overall.
It was the ninth career two-homer game for Mondesi, who was 4-for-6 and tied a career high with six RBI.
"It was an inside fastball," Mondesi said of the game-winning homer. "I'm just trying to hit things out, drive in runs. This year we have a good team. If everybody stays healthy, we'll go all the way."
Jeff Shaw pitched two hitless innings for the win and gave Davey Johnson a victory in his first game as Dodgers manager.
Randy Johnson left the Houston Astros and agreed to a four-year, $53 million deal with the Diamondbacks over the winter. He gave up two runs and five hits over seven innings while walking six and striking out nine.
"I felt like I kept us in the game. I felt like I kept the Dodgers at bay," Johnson said. "I put us in a position to win the ballgame."
The 1995 American League Cy Young Award winner still was more effective than Brown, who left the San Diego Padres to sign a record seven-year, $105 million deal with Los Angeles.
After yielding just eight homers all last season, Brown allowed a pair of solo homers to Bernard Gilkey, who had three hits, and a three-run blast to Jay Bell.
All tickets for the game sold out a month ago in anticipation of watching Brown, who was not up to the task. He allowed five runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out seven.
"I made a couple of bad pitches. Some of the others were good but they just put the bat on the ball," Brown said. "If I had to pitch bad for us to get a win on Opening Day, so be it. The pitches weren't ending up in the glove the way I wanted them to."
There was interest not only for Brown, but for the rest of the revamped Dodgers, who also added Devon White and Todd Hundley in the offseason. White homered in his Dodgers debut but Hundley was 1-for-5 and struck out four times.
Mondesi collected his first RBI with a single in the first. Gilkey tied it with a homer in the fourth before the Dodgers answered in the bottom of the inning on White's homer.
Gilkey started a five-run explosion in the sixth with a leadoff homer. Kelly Stinnett singled with one out and Steve Finley singled one out later before Bell hit a wind-blown homer to left to give the Diamondbacks a 5-2 lead. Finley was 2-for-6 in his Arizona debut.
Pedro Borbon relieved and the Diamondbacks manufactured another run as Travis Lee singled, stole second and scored on a single by Matt Williams.
But Arizona's shaky bullpen could not hold the lead. An RBI single by Eric Karros in the eighth cut the deficit to 6-3, setting the stage for the ninth.
Vizcaino reached on an infield single to start the frame and Dave Hansen singled with one out. Olson struck out Sheffield with two out before Mondesi homered over the left field fence.
"We have a good bullpen. They might not have done the job today, but when they get the feel for everything, they'll do a good job," Diamondbacks manager Buck Showalter said.
The Diamondbacks have lost each of their two season openers while the Dodgers improved to 22-20 in openers since moving to Los Angeles.
