GAME RECAPDelino DeShields homered and drove in three runs and Matt Morris allowed three runs over six innings as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, 9-3.
Morris (4-3) gave up 11 hits and struck out two without a walk for his third straight win and second against Los Angeles.
DeShields scored the first run of the game as St. Louis grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and his fourth homer of the season, a three-run shot, closed the scoring in the ninth.
Pedro Astacio (3-5) allowed five runs and nine hits over four innings and lost for the fifth time in six starts. Astacio appeared to be upset when Los Angeles manager Bill Russell came to the mound to talk to him in the fourth.
"It happens when you're not pitching well in the heat of battle," said Russell. "Pedro was not happy with his performance, neither was I. He's a competitor, he wants to do well. I wouldn't have him any other way. Today was just one of those games. I'm sure you won't see Pedro do that again. He'll be out there for his next start."
DeShields led off the game with a single to left field and moved to third when Dmitri Young beat out an infield single. Ray Lankford lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead and Ron Gant beat out an infield single up the third-base line. John Mabry's single to left scored Young and extended his hitting streak to 19 games.
The Dodgers threatened in the bottom of the first but did not score. With one out, Todd Zeile, Raul Mondesi and Mike Piazza singled to load the bases. Morris, who was hit in the left leg by Piazza's line drive, then struck out Eric Karros and Todd Hollandsworth flied out to end the inning.
"He was outstanding," said St. Louis manager Tony La Russa about Morris. "He gets belted with a hard shot, everybody knows he has physical talent but he shows he has toughness. You can't pitch in the National League without it."
"If it was on the foot it would have been worse," said Morris. "When I started to walk it felt numb but it didn't effect my landing. I got a lot of ground balls but you can't control where they go. I had trouble with my curveball, I kind of struggled through most of the inning but when I needed to make my pitches I made them."
DeShields had an RBI groundout in the second, increasing the Cardinals' lead to 3-0. Lankford led off the third with a double, moved to third on a single by Gant and scored when Mabry grounded into a double play to make it 4-0.
Lampkin led off the fourth and hit Astacio's 3-1 pitch over the right-field fence for his third home run, giving the Cardinals a 5-0 advantage.
The Dodgers scored twice in the fourth. Piazza, Karros and Hollandsworth hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Nelson Liriano's fielder's choice scored Piazza and Greg Gagne's RBI single plated Karros to cut the Cardinals lead to 5-2.
Chad Fonville's RBI single pulled the Dodgers within 5-3 in the sixth.
Royce Clayton led off the seventh and hit Antonio Osuna's 1-1 pitch over the left-field fence for his fifth homer and a 6-3 lead. With two out in the ninth, Willie McGee had a pinch-hit RBI triple before scoring on DeShields' homer.
