GAME RECAPDelino DeShields' bases-loaded walk with two out in the ninth inning scored Mark Sweeney with the winning run as the St. Louis Cardinals nipped the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-1.
With one out in the ninth, John Mabry doubled off reliever Darren Hall (0-2) and pinch-hitter Sweeney was intentionally walked. Royce Clayton singled to left field, but Todd Hollandsworth gunned down Mabry at the plate while Sweeney and Clayton advanced, leaving runners on second and third.
Pinch-hitter Willie McGee was intentionally walked to load the bases, Mark Guthrie relieved Hall and DeShields walked on four pitches, forcing home Sweeney.
"The first pitch dictated my at-bat, the only pitch that was even close was the third pitch," said DeShields about the final at-bat.
"I wanted to have the left-hander left-hander confrontation," said Dodgers manager Bill Russell about bringing in Guthrie. "It was another tough loss. The starting ptiching performed outstanding again."
T.J. Mathews (2-2) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief of starter Andy Benes, who allowed one run over eight innings.
"My poor start last year made me work harder on my changeup and curve and now I don't have to rely on my fastball as much," said Benes. "That has made me a much better pitcher."
The Cardinals took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Mabry led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice by Mike DiFelice. Benes followed with a double into the gap in left-center field, scoring Mabry.
Los Angeles answered in the bottom of the sixth. Starting pitcher Ramon Martinez led off with a double and took third on a sacrifice by Wilton Guerrero. Eric Anthony followed with a single to right to plate Martinez.
The Dodgers threatened in the eighth, putting runners on first and second with one out. But Benes beared down, fanning Anthony and getting Raul Mondesi to pop out in foul territory.
St. Louis improved to 5-11 in one-run games while Los Angeles fell to 7-8 in one-run decisions.
Martinez allowed a run and four hits with four walks and five strikeouts in seven innings. Scott Radinsky followed with a scoreless eighth before giving way to Hall.
