Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Saturday continues to be a dark day for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Henry Blanco hit a two-run homer with two outs in the 10th inning as the Milwaukee Brewers handed the Los Angeles Dodgers their eighth straight Saturday defeat, 4-2.

Jose Hernandez got the 10th inning going against Mike Fetters (4-2) with a two-out single. Blanco followed by hitting Fetters' next offering over the left-field wall for his sixth homer, but first since June 30.

"I think that's what I need to do if I'm going to stay in the lineup," Blanco said. "Things will get better for me. It feels good to help the team win a game. Hopefully the home run relaxes me. I think it was a fastball. I'm not a home run hitter."

The former Dodger caught three runners attempting to steal and has thrown out 21 of the last 33 potential base stealers.

"He had an outstanding game prior to the home run," Milwaukee manager and former Dodger player and coach Davey Lopes said. "The things he did defensively kept us in the game. He's the best in the National League, without question."

Geoff Jenkins hit a pair of solo homers for the Brewers, who won for just the third time in their last 12 road games.

Juan Acevedo (2-4) notched the win, yielding a hit and two walks in a scoreless eighth. Curtis Leskanic struck out three batters in the ninth to pick up his fourth save.

Gary Sheffield hit his major league-leading 35th home run in the fourth inning and Shawn Green smacked his 19th for the Dodgers, who had their three-game winning streak stopped.

Los Angeles has not won on a Saturday since June 10th.

The Dodgers missed out on a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth and draw closer to the lead in the NL West Division. Acevedo started the inning by getting Mark Grudzielanek to ground out but walked Sheffield. Blanco caught Sheffield trying to steal, a move that proved costly when Green followed with a bloop double to right field.

Jenkins put Milwaukee ahead 1-0 in the first inning, hitting an 0-1 pitch from Dodgers starter Chan Ho Park over the right-field fence for his 20th home run.

"Park was throwing the ball hard," Jenkins said. "I got up there in the first at-bat and felt good. The pitch was a changeup. I was able to get good wood on the ball. I'm seeing the ball well right now. It feels nice."

Sheffield tied the game in the fourth inning as he hit his first home run against his former team. Following his solo shot off Brewers starter Jeff D'Amico, Sheffield has now homered against all 29 major league teams he has faced, having never played against Tampa Bay.

Jenkins broke the deadlock in the sixth with another solo homer off Park, his 21st. The former USC Trojan recorded his first multi-homer game of the season, second of his career and matched his career high in home runs, set last year.

"Jenkins just hit a good pitch," Park said. "There was nothing I could do about it. The first was a changeup, the second was a fastball."

Green snapped an 0-for-8 slide in the seventh inning with a solo shot off D'Amico. The rightfielder's previous hit was a three-run homer in the first inning at Pittsburgh on August 2. He and Sheffield homered in the same game for the first time since July 20 against Colorado.

"(D'Amico) threw a great game," Green said. "He threw all three pitches for strikes. In a close game, we feel like we're going to win, that's the feeling in the dugout. The Brewers have a good young team. It looks like they're building for the future."

D'Amico, who has not lost since June 5, allowed two runs and five hits in eight innings. He struck out a career-high eight batters and walked one.

"He was outstanding again," Lopes said. "That's the kind of outing he's given us all year. He's established himself as one of the best in the NL. We expect big things from him in the future."

Park gave up two runs and six hits in six innings with eight strikeouts and three walks. But the Dodgers bullpen lost for the first time since July 2 at San Francisco after winning their last eight decisions.

"Chan Ho pitched a good game," Los Angeles manager Davey Johnson said. "He came up against good company in D'Amico. The other guys pitched a hell of a good ballgame. I have to tip my hat to him. Chan Ho probably had another inning in him but I knew the other guy wasn't probably wasn't going to give up a lot of runs so I hit for him."
