Game Story

Mark McGwire tied a franchise record with his major league-leading 43rd homer and drove in three runs and Ray Lankford belted a grand slam and knocked in five as the St. Louis Cardinals coasted to a 13-1 rout of the San Diego Padres.

Lankford led off the fifth with a single against starter Mark Langston (3-3) and Brian Boehringer came on in relief. McGwire deposited Boehringer's 2-1 pitch into the left-field loge, 458 feet away, to extend St. Louis' lead to 6-1.

McGwire, who collected four hits for the seventh time in his career, tied Johnny Mize, who hit 43 homers in 1940, for the Cardinals' single-season record. McGwire is on pace to hit 72 homers and drive in 159 runs.

"I don't know, I have to think about it, it's a pretty cool thing," McGwire said about the record. "We did a lot of things right. We got a lot of key hits, it would be really nice if we put two or three weeks like this together. It's been a real weird year so far, we win three or four then lose three or four."

Matt Morris (1-0) allowed one run and three hits over 6 1/3 innings, walking one and striking out four. Morris, who missed nearly three months with a shoulder injury, has allowed just four runs and 19 hits in 23 1/3 innings since returning from the disabled list.

"I stayed with my gameplan, I did make a mistake to Vaughn there, it was a slider that didn't really slide," Morris said. "That's why he has 35 home runs. I was kind of going with what felt right and I was locating the pitches well. Sometimes it's hard to pitch being up that many runs. I'm just going to take every start and go at it as hard as I can."

"Morris was throwing well coming in and he was on again tonight," Bochy said. "That's a solid lineup and you have to make your pitches against these guys. We knew it."

Lance Painter, John Frascatore and Jeff Brantley combined to ptich 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

After popping up with the bases loaded in the eighth, Lankford connected for his fourth career grand slam and 16th home run of the season in the ninth off Roberto Ramirez to cap the scoring.

"The at-bat before with the bases loaded I had a good, quality at-bat. I got a curve and just popped it up," Lankford said. "This time I was a little more aggressive. I don't even know what the pitch was, I just saw it and reacted."

Royce Clayton and Gary Gaetti hit solo homers for the Cardinals, who have won three of four.

Greg Vaughn continued his spectacular season with a solo homer, his 35th. The Padres, who suffered their worst loss of the season, had a five-game winning streak stopped.

"Vaughn doesn't hit many cheapies either, both those balls were hit pretty well," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "McGwire has to be the strongest power hitter of all-time, he certainly got all of that one. You have to make your pitches and tonight we just didn't do that."

Langston was hit hard for the third straight start, yielding five runs and eight hits over four innings. In his last three outings, the left-hander has been rocked for 18 runs and 25 hits in 12 innings.

Lankford opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single but Vaughn's homer in the second tied the score.

Clayton's solo homer, his fourth, in the third put the Cardinals ahead for good and Brian Jordan added a run-scoring single for a 3-1 lead.

Pat Kelly's sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 4-1 before McGwire struck an inning later.

Gary Gaetti hit his ninth home run and McGwire drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth, increasing the lead to 8-1. Brian Hunter came home on Ramirez's wild pitch in the ninth.
